You may have heard over the last few months the familiar chirping sound of the insects known as cicadas. Emerging every year around this time, cicadas are a part of two separate families. The first family are located in Australia and Tasmania while the other can be found all over the world excluding Antarctica.
The sound that you’re hearing is created only by male cicadas as female cicadas lack tymbals, though some species of females are able to use their wings to create sound in response to the males’ songs. Male cicadas usually produce sound for one of three reasons: a courtship song (a little flirting never hurt anyone), a congregational song regulated by weather fluctuations and a disturbance song when the cicada is under duress.
Thankfully, while cicadas are loud, they are completely harmless and nothing to worry about if you start seeing them around. Cicadas do not bite, sting or spread any kind of disease and are not harmful to humans, animals or plants. In fact, cicadas are actually edible and are considered delicious in some cultures. Additionally, cicadas are normally only active during the day, so don’t expect to have your sleep disturbed by their chirping.
So how do you manage cicadas? There’s actually no need to spray for cicadas. Pesticides are generally ineffective against these harmless creatures. As previously mentioned, cicadas do not eat plants so there’s no need to cover your trees, bushes or flowers with the exception of young trees which may be harmed when cicadas lay their eggs. If you wish to protect your young trees try covering them with mesh or netting with ¼ inch or smaller openings. The most important thing to remember is that cicadas will go away, leaving behind just a shell of themselves until next year.
Did you know? Cicadas have been used in myth and folklore as a symbol of carefree living and immortality.
