You’ve never heard of camel crickets? Well, let’s hop to it!
Camel crickets get their name from their hunchbacked appearance, but sometimes they are also known as cave crickets or spider crickets. They are light to dark brown and have six legs including hind legs. Camel crickets can be found throughout the world, living in caves, underneath damp leaves, stones or rotting logs, but you won’t hear them like your average cricket because they do not possess sound producing organs.
While camel crickets can cause a bit of a nuisance if they get inside the home, they do not pose any health threats to humans as they do not bite, are not poisonous and do not carry any diseases. Some species have been known to damage clothing and other fabrics if they’re found inside so it’s important to treat them if you believe you may be finding them in your home.
The best way to prevent camel crickets from coming inside your home is to reduce the areas of moisture where they would most likely be found. Using a dehumidifier can help prevent buildup of moisture inside the home.
Other ways to prevent a buildup of moisture include: not keeping wood piles near your house, using weather-stripping to seal the bottom of all entrances, using sticky traps in corners near doorways and keeping areas that may collect moisture (crawl spaces, garages, bathrooms) well ventilated. While reducing the moisture in your home is the best way to prevent an infestation, camel crickets can also be treated with speciality chemicals.
