Fire ant colonies include a queen, winged males and females and three kinds of workers. Adult workers can be aggressive when under threat by other colonies. Young fire ants on the other hand, tend to play dead, much like the rest of us when the weather gets too hot. Fire ants enjoy a variety of foods including honeydew, plant nectar, seeds and fruits.
The most common way to treat fire ants is by using ant bait which specifically targets and kills the ants. Additionally, problem mounds can be treated using a mound drench which is a liquid or dry treatment that can provide quick control of the mound. You should absolutely never kick or disturb a fire ant mound, especially if you are allergic or sensitive to their bite.
Fire ants can be dangerous if humans or animals come in contact with them, but there are ways that you can prevent being bitten. Some ways to prevent ant bites include: wearing insect repellent, tucking your pants into your socks if you’re walking in wooded/dense areas that you suspect may have fire ants, and always wear shoes when walking outside. Most importantly, some humans and animals can be allergic to fire ants so contact a medical professional if you believe you may be having a reaction to a bite.
Summer should be a time for enjoying the sun and spending time outside so if you’re worried about fire ants or see any in your yard, contact a pest control professional to help get rid of them so you can have a safe and happy summer!
Did you know? Fire ants were accidentally brought to the U.S. on a cargo boat from South America in the 1930s.
